How does a noun show parts?

The Partitive Genitive is used to show what something is a part of. For example, if I say ‘part of the pizza', the word pizza shows what the part belongs to—a use of the partitive genitive.

You might be asking how can you tell what use of the genitive a genitive noun is functioning as. In the case of the Partitive Genitive, this comes down to recognizing a few key words. The Partitive Genitive will be used with words that denote a part of something larger such as all, part, none, some, half, and more.

Here are some examples, with the genitive noun in bold:

  • minstreis aeteis eituas - of the smaller part of the money

  • idic tangineis - that (part) of the opinion
