Phew! We’re finally through the genitive case usages. Now, to the dative case.

One of the most common uses of the dative is to show the indirect object with transitive verbs (verbs that require direct objects). Think about words like ‘give’. You need to show to what or whom something is given, and this would be rendered in the dative case.

Here is an example, with the dative noun in bold:

  • Anagtiai Diíviiai dunum deded - he gave the gift to the divine Angitia (an Oscan deity of serpents)
